Last week, the Senate voted along party lines to confirm Jayanta Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, to be the new Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Marty Makary, MD, MPH, was also confirmed along party lines as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dr. Bhattacharya will now take charge of a federal agency responsible for billions of dollars in medical research, including those related to cancer treatments and technology. In his new capacity as FDA Commissioner, Dr. Makary will oversee both the regulation of and research into new technologies aimed at improving health outcomes for cancer patients.
