ASTRO supports September 30 as Rare Cancer Day

October 21, 2024

ASTRO Board of Directors Chair Howard Sandler, MD, MS, FASTRO sent a letter to lead sponsor Congressman Mike Kelly (R-PA) in support of House Resolution H.Res. 1521, designating September 30 as Rare Cancer Day. ASTRO applauds Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Derek Kilmer, (D-WA), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Debbie Dingell (D-MI) for their continued efforts and leadership through the House Cancer Caucus. This resolution is crucial to highlight the unique challenges faced by people diagnosed with rare cancers and to raise awareness about the need for improved early detection and treatment options. Rare Cancer Day is devoted to shining a light on the impact of rare cancers and the challenges patients face. Currently, an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 people in the United States are living with a rare cancer, which accounts for about 20% of all cancer diagnoses. These cancers often go unrecognized due to their unusual symptoms, leading to delayed diagnoses and poorer outcomes. Rare Cancer Day would help raise awareness for individuals and their families and highlight the importance of early diagnosis.
