ASTRO-supported Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act reintroduced
March 7, 2023
The “Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act (H.R. 1202) has been reintroduced by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and John Boozman (R-AR) and Representatives Brian Babin (R-TX) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA). ASTRO joined 42 medical and dental specialty organizations in sending a letter thanking the bill leads and expressing support.
If passed, this legislation would allow borrowers serving in a medical internship or residency program to qualify for interest-free deferment on their student loans. This prevents physicians from being penalized during their residency. In the 116th Congress, this legislation gained 28 cosponsors in the House and three in the Senate.
