Representatives Raul Ruiz, MD (D-CA), Larry Bucshon, MD (R-IN), Ami Bera, MD (D-CA), and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD (R-IA), have introduced legislation that would provide an inflationary update to Medicare physician payments that is equal to the Medicare Economic Index (MEI). ASTRO and other physician-representing organizations have noted that physician services are one of the only Medicare services not currently receiving annual inflationary updates. If passed, the Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act (HR 2474) would help stabilize physician payments year-to-year and preserve access to care for patients wherever they live.
