ASTRO submits comments on NRC preliminary proposed rulemaking on extravasations

August 31, 2023

On Thursday, August 31, 2023, ASTRO submitted comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on preliminary proposed rule language to add reporting of extravasations as medical events. The NRC is proposing medical event reporting when “the administration of byproduct material results in an extravasation that requires medical attention for a suspected radiation injury.” The preliminary language includes the following:

  • Definitions of the following: “extravasation,” “medical attention” and “suspected radiation injury.”
  • Requirement for licensees to have written procedures on detection and reporting of extravasations.
  • The NRC sought feedback on questions in the following areas: definitions, procedures, and health care inequities.

In general, ASTRO believes that the draft preliminary proposed rule language is sufficient to capture severe extravasations and should not be changed.
