ASTRO’s Government Relations Council Chair Howard Sandler, MD, MS, FASTRO, met with new NRC Commissioner Bradley Crowell on October 13. Commissioner Crowell was sworn in on August 26, 2022. After a brief introduction to ASTRO, the discussion focused on ASTRO’s opposition to a petition for rulemaking on the Reporting Nuclear Medicine Injection Extravasations as Medical Events. ASTRO believes that adding NRC oversight of extravasation will unnecessarily increase regulatory burden for licensees without a radiological or patient safety benefit, and therefore opposes rulemaking in this matter. The Commission has not yet voted on the petition.
