Support for Turkish and Syrian communities impacted by the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes
ARLINGTON, Va., February 27, 2023
In light of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, ASTRO extends our continued sympathy and support to the Syrian and Turkish people as they endure and begin to recover from this tragedy. We are particularly concerned for people with cancer and the medical professionals who care for them.
As I recently shared with The Lancet Oncology, ASTRO has been in contact with our colleagues in the region to identify ways to best help facilities resume treatments for people with cancer. International partners may be able to help Syrian and Turkish people with cancer access the information and treatments they need, and ASTRO stands ready to use our communication channels to help spread the word and seek needed resources. Looking ahead, there may be a role for information-sharing with oncologists and health-care providers from other areas that have faced large-scale natural disasters, and we will work to serve as a bridge to connect people who can best help to expedite solutions.
For our members in the region, know that we wish you continued strength, and admire your resilience. ASTRO has a financial hardship policy to help members in times of need. Impacted members can request to have their dues waived by completing the Dues Waiver Request. For ASTRO members who want to support people in the region, we encourage you to donate to international aid organizations including Doctors Without Borders, Americares, and Project Hope.
