RO-ILS Celebrates 10 Years

RO-ILS 10 Years Advancing Safety

RO-ILS: Radiation Oncology Incident Learning System launched at a congressional briefing on June 19, 2014, to fulfil a commitment of ASTRO's Target Safely campaign. This program aggregates errors, near misses and other operational issues from diverse practices across the country in a standardized, radiation oncology specific format under the auspices of the federal Patient Safety Act. The data is federally protected and confidential, giving assurances to users that the data is in safe hands. In the first decade, more than 850 facilities across the United States have enrolled in the free program, more than 37,000 events have been reported and over 60 written education resources have been released. This work is made possible by RO-ILS sponsors and supporters, RO-ILS users and RO-ILS volunteers.

RO-ILS Education

Radiation oncology experts review and analyze the RO-ILS database and develop de-identified and non-identified education for RO-ILS users and the community. The following written reports were publicly released during the first half of 2024:

Elizabeth Covington

"RO-ILS has been critical to understanding and improving our departmental workflows. From the analysis tools and use of personalized tags, we can perform comprehensive analysis of incidents to ensure that we are continuously monitoring and improving our workflows. Education material from RO-ILS, including case studies and themed reports, are routinely used in our department during safety rounds and trainee education. Having access to real incidents enhances the learning experience and allows us to review our processes and procedures to ensure that we have robust safety nets."

RO-ILS Donors

The RO-ILS program is free to users thanks to the generous support from professional associations and vendors. This work would not be possible without the contributions of these organizations who have patient care and patient safety at their core.

List of RO-ILS Enrolled Practices

Participation in RO-ILS is free and provides U.S.-based practices access to a secure, web-based portal and the ability to send data to a federally listed Patient Safety Organization (PSO), Clarity PSO. Practices that have given Clarity PSO and ASTRO permission to publish their enrollment in the program are included on the RO-ILS listing.
