March 5, 2025
ASTRO joined over 600 organizations and 3,511 private citizens in a letter to Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins (R-ME), Vice Chair Patty Murray (D-WA), House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-TX), and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) urging robust investment in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for FY25. The letter highlighted the American public's strong support for medical research funding as well as the positive economic impacts – like job creation and medical breakthroughs – of such investment. The letter also aruged against cuts to NIH grantee Facilities and Administrative costs. Curent proposals to cap indirect costs at 15% could reduce NIH funding by at least $4 billion and lead to several negative impacts. These include slowed scientific progress, delayed treatments and cures, a weakened U.S. research ecosystem, and reduced global competitiveness.
