Global Health Scholars Grant Application

Background

  • To further encourage international outreach and academic pursuits among radiation oncology residents, ARRO and ASTRO established the ARRO-ASTRO Global Health Scholar Grant. The ARRO-ASTRO Global Health Scholar Grant will provide four $2,500 travel support for radiation oncology residents each calendar year.

Eligibility and application requirements

  • In order to be eligible as an applicant, the resident must obtain a written Letter of Support from his or her program director. This letter must indicate that the residency program supports and approves time away to the Destination Program, Clinic or Institution as well as to the following ASTRO Annual Meeting.
  • A Statement of Intent must be completed by a sponsor, faculty or staff member of the Destination Program, Clinic or Institution.
  • The Destination Clinic must be an established clinic and be fully operational. Applications for projects to visit new clinics, or clinics in process of being built, will not be considered.
  • All projects must be completed in one city. Projects that include working with multiple institutions in one city will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  • The project must be completed in four to six contiguous weeks in the same city.
  • The scholar must travel as a resident or within six months of residency completion.
  • Expected travel date must be included in the application.

Clear goals, objectives and descriptions of how time will be organized during the project must be included in the application.

Application deadline

  • All submissions, including Online Application Form, Letter of Support and Statement of Intent, must be submitted no later than Friday, April 12, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time. Any submissions received after that date will not be eligible for review.

Requirements for award recipients

  • Grant will be awarded upon completion of project via reimbursement of travel expenses. Awardee must submit receipts and a detailed account of all travel expenses incurred for the entire project (A template for submitting expenses will be provided.).
  • Travel plans must be confirmed (itinerary set, but tickets do NOT have to be purchased) by no later than July 31, 2024. A detailed plan should be submitted to ARRO.
  • Award winners will be required to complete a short evaluation. An evaluation will also be required of the host mentor at the time of project completion.
  • Recipients will provide photos of their experience and agree to be interviewed about their experience for various ASTRO and ARRO publications.
  • Awardees must sign a waiver releasing ASTRO and ARRO of any liability or responsibility related to or in conjunction with their travel and stay.
  • Failure to comply with program requirements may be subject to award revocation at the discretion of the ARRO Global Health Initiative.

When scoring applications, reviewers will consider:

  • The proposed project is achievable, can benefit the community in which it is conducted, and will contribute broadly to the field of global oncology.
  • The applicant demonstrates a prior history of involvement in global health and their proposed project will further their career goals in global oncology.
  • The proposed project has support from local stakeholders and collaborators.
  • The proposed project is likely to be completed during the stated timeline and has the opportunity for sustainable and longitudinal future collaboration.
  • The application is complete, thorough and endorsed by the applicant's home institution.

Notifications

  • Submissions will be assessed and awarded by members of the ASTRO International Education Subcommittee based on the potential of the application to contribute to the applicant’s training through patient care, research or outreach through humanitarian work as an ambassador of ASTRO and the field of radiation oncology. Award decisions and notification will be made at the end of May 2024.
