See the new and expanded Radiation Therapy for Lung Cancer brochure in your registration bag and at the ASTRO booth
Visit the ASTRO booth in the Exhibit Hall to pick up a copy of the newly expanded Radiation Therapy for Lung Cancer brochure! Updated in 2023, this booklet contains important information for patients and their caregivers on the main types of cancer of the lung and how radiation therapy works, as well as an easily readable side effects chart and questions to ask the radiation oncology team. Brochures are available for download and to purchase in packs of 50. Also available for patients is a free nine-minute Radiation Therapy for Lung Cancer video.

ASTRO offers 17 brochures on general radiation therapy and disease-site specific topics that are available for download and to purchase from the product catalog. These brochures were created to help physicians provide information to people with cancer and their families about the treatment options available. See these and ASTRO’s other patient-focused resources as well as presentations designed to inform health care professionals about radiation therapy.

ASTRO/ESTRO clinical guideline on local therapy for oligometastatic lung cancer
In April, ASTRO and the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) issued a guideline on definitive local therapy options, including radiation and surgery, for oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The guideline emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary team approach to guide treatment decisions for oligometastatic disease. Treatment for oligometastatic NSCLC historically involved systemic therapy such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy, with local therapy given only for palliation and symptom relief. A growing body of research, however, points to an additional role for definitive local therapy to all disease sites, aiming at durable tumor control and improved survival outcomes. The guideline addresses patient selection, treatment planning and delivery techniques for definitive local therapy to manage oligometastatic NSCLC, emphasizing the need for patient-centered, multidisciplinary decision making. The guideline task force also created algorithms on the optimal clinical scenarios for local therapy and the different types of local therapy available for these patients.

The multidisciplinary guideline task force included radiation, medical and surgical oncologists, a radiation oncology resident, a pulmonologist, thoracic surgeons, a medical physicist and a patient representative. The guideline was based on a systematic literature review of articles published through February 2022.

See the full guideline and review the key questions and recommendations in Practical Radiation Oncology.

SITC’s Clinical Practice Guidelines and CPG Mobile App
The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer’s (SITC) Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines program is a collection of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) developed by multidisciplinary panels of experts. They draw from their own practical experience as well as evidence in the published literature and clinical trial data to develop evidence- and consensus-based recommendations on when and how to use immunotherapy to help improve outcomes for patients with cancer.

Highlighting key information from SITC’s published guidelines, the SITC CPG Mobile App features important aspects of immunotherapy treatment as well as interactive tools and companion educational resources.
