2006 Program Recap
In 2006 ASTRO expanded its government relations and health policy activities, increased educational offerings to members, added a new research department to expand its focus on research and worked to improve the ASTRO awards program.
As part of this overall initiative, ASTRO also determined that 2006 was a good time to introduce the new ASTRO Fellows program with the FASTRO designation. The first group of ASTRO Fellows was inducted in a ceremony on Sunday, November 5, during the 2006 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
Eligibility to receive the FASTRO designation is based upon length of membership and meritorious service to ASTRO and to the field of radiation oncology. Four possible pathways to becoming a Fellow – leadership/service, research, patient care and education are considered. At the outset of the program, the required length of active membership in ASTRO is 20 years. Once the program is up and running for a number of years, this requirement will be lowered to 10 years.
At the inauguaral Fellows Ceremony held during the ASTRO Annual Meeting in Philadelphia there were 75 members inducted as Fellows.
2007 Program Recap
The ASTRO fellows program just completed its second year with the induction of 41 members into the class of 2007 Fellows. The 2007 Fellows were inducted and honored at a ceremony on Tuesday, October 30, 2007, in Los Angeles during the ASTRO Annual Meeting.
